Elsewhere there are better individual tales than many of the ones in this book; but there are a lot more clunkers as well. If there is one suit this collection comes up short in, it would be humor. This is a heavy buncha stories. A better recommendation for the Ellison newbie might be Strange Wine, Shatterday, or Stalking the Nightmare, unless the person clearly has a strong stomach.
This book is a cold, hard rap to the temple. But hey I read it first and I survived. The theme of this book is God or rather, gods. Though Yahweh or someone like him makes an appearance here and there, most of these stories address other, newer gods who rule the lives of humans or more accurately, to whom humans give power over themselves -- consciously or without sufficient heed.
